I partially blame the voles as they have been going mad underneath in this area and I have probably removed a bucket of soil from around the poor plant bases. I have been watering (tip the dirty duck water bowl on the soil) so I don't think it is because it is too dry from a watering point of view, but maybe there are some roots hanging in mid air in a tunnel here and there? Or maybe it's just that they are getting settled in, because sure as hell are gonna be a slight 'problem' next year!!! Did you say you just chopped off stems if they got in the way/too numerous? I think I'll have to go back to brambling in the ditch this year as I really need to make jelly to take to England later in the year - I would be disowned if I didn't make any for my MIL. So far I have frozen a whole marge tub full for making jelly later on.

Yup. In the winter I take the whole thing back to a structure of main stems then it seems that the fruit grow off the new buds.

Okay, but, next year's fruit forms on the stems that are formed this year so when this year's are over we chop them off, then tie in next year's canes to the appropriate wire. I will have to chop off the end of next year's canes though as they are too blardy long! No blackberries out on the ditch bank that I can access anymore as it's too overgrown with nettles now. So no bramble jelly this year!

You are very welcome to pop over and PYO for the 2012 bramble jelly. Think I must've taken off about 10kg so far and am sure loads will go to waste, there's huge amounts there today coz I peeked. Am here every day (cept Sats).

Busy this week, or at least for the next few days - will have a scout up the lane where I know there are some more brambles around the old ruins. If not I'll give you a shout! (and thanks I meant about the pruning - you don't cut off the new stems being formed this year do you? Cos I believe you prune just the same way as with summer fruiting raspberries.

I chop off the older stems leaving nice new ones from ground up and tie the new ones in to make frame-work, and trim back all the off-shoots to leave just the stem (like a skeleton) then I find in spring they bud off the new stems and fruit from there. Anything that sticks out from the main framework I chop orf. No idea how you're supposed to do it, but seems to work ok here.
