As a former fairly active member of this forum, I turned off at the beginning of this year when it became the Annon3 show.
I am sorry but the sometimes unintelligible ramblings of this poster initially slightly frustrated me and this fast became an annoyance.
When Ali started this forum, it was a welcome relief to get away from the idiocy often expressed on Anglo info and have a good exchange of views between a large number of postings and posters.
Despite the virtual demise of AI forum (now discussions - or not!!) there has also been a demise of topics and postings to this forum as well. Personally I have to say no wonder that Annon3 says there were 100 visitors and no postings, perhaps what they saw of the site was enough to say - no thanks we will stick with Facebook!!
So as I have done this year I will drop into the site about every 3 months in the hope there will be a change but I do not intend to hold my breath!!
Happy ramblings Annon3

Sadly Meldrew I totally agree with you. I used to post regularly here in the days before any opinion you had was dragged down to a personal level. I keep looking in from time to time but for the moment all those I used to enjoy a good discussion with seem to have gone into hiding. We live in hope that things will improve at some point.

Do you both think that Annon has put people (in general) off posting? I agree his 'ramblings' are an acquired taste and have verged on confrontational, however at least he posted and got replies. It kept the forum ticking over so to speak.
I was of the opinion (and stated such) that to post contentious threads could have the effect of driving people away rather than getting involved in something that might develop into a 'slanging' match. Much the same went on over on AI and to a lesser extent here. Perhaps that is what's occurred on this forum. I wish I knew, as I don't know how to increase traffic on the forum.
So, both of you, would you care to post something to discuss? You can make it fairly controversial if you want, and (as a moderator) I'll try to let things get lively but will crack down on members if it gets personal.
If you feel that someone has been insulting you can always report the post or the member to me and I'll do my best to resolve matters.

I cannot speak for anyone else but I said a while back that after a number of instances of personal insults and obscene language posted by Annon 3 that I would no longer respond to any of his postings. This remains the case. I don't think he is soley responsible for the decline in the forum but is certainly a factor. Sadly from looking at the number of members logging in these days, the people I enjoyed a lighthearted banter with are no longer visiting. Maybe social media sites such as facebook are a factor, I cannot comment as I am not a user. I have not given up on this forum, I am merely observing from the sidelines for the moment.

Facebook is a factor, I'm sure. Several of the previously regular forum posters are my Facebook friends. However, we rarely chat about or share items relating to this area of France. So, what is the purpose of this forum? If it is to catch up socially with friends, Facebook is indeed a better option. If you want to throw open a discussion on a subject, this forum is probably more suitable.
Certainly, there is no place for personal insults or obscene language on here and as a moderator I'd attempt to clamp down on it quickly. However, as you rightly point out Annon wasn't solely responsible for the decline.
Personally, I think that World events this year have polarised people. In some cases friendships have been ended because of differences of opinion. Some of the old contributors on here may be afraid to post because of the ill feeling their posts may spark off. Sadly that does often descend into personal insults.
But what has happened to the 'everyday' postings? It seems no-one can be bothered to contribute. I think we should persist but for how long I don't know...

Sorry Bis, but we'll have to disagree. Whether or not you agreed with him, or found his views, style and manner of speech objectionable, without his posts this summer the forum would have been somewhat lacking in posts of any kind.
Did he turn away posters (guests and regulars)? Possibly, and I'll repeat my concerns that controversial posts can drive people away rather than attracting them. I'll also admit to probably being too lax a moderator and not putting the case for him being banned more forcibly. However (and again I'm repeating myself) how many posts would there have been without him? In fact isn't the only reason we are posting now, because of him?
I'd love to see this forum have more posters and threads, but I have less time on my hands now (having embraced the freedom of retirement) and I suspect that others have 'better' things to do.....

Looking back through some of the threads earlier this year, one of the main reasons this forum has declined is because a number of the core members resigned after suffering offensive posts from Annon 3. I along with others called for some of his more offensive postings to be deleted at the time but alas this never happened. The members who left were active posters and contributors without whom there is less material to discuss and become involved in.
As I said before, I don't consider Annon 3 to be the sole reason for the decline of this forum which is affected by many ongoing and changeable factors, however I don't think the damage he caused should be underestimated and the desire to keep this forum uncensored and free from regulation, whilst admirable in some respects,on occasions when "the line" is crossed the feelings of all members have to be considered above those of the desire to protect freedom of speech.
I am sorry Bisdu that we seem to have lost another valuable contributor, I was hoping that like me, you were sitting in the sidelines waiting for better times. I have been a member here from the beginning and I have seen this forum go through quiet times before. I am biding my time to see if there is any light at the end of the tunnel.

I have been trolled off a few Brittany sites and have given up on them. On one, one particular person revealed 3 of my different personas ( new ones hatched when old ones disclosed). Once disclosed the major troll comes out and would argue black is white just to have a go at me. Not paranoia just fact. As for annon3 just ignore them if you don't like their ramblings.
