i think what most people want is a friendly and helpful forum with hopefully different sections to suit the members with varied interests. The basis is already there with maybe a few adjustments. What is lacking is enthusiasm and a will to make it work. People will post when they have a subject which engages them and they feel comfortable to do so without fear of being humiliated or belittled for expressing an opinion. A discussion as opposed to an argument whether tongue in cheek or serious. This forum used to offer that and I would like to see that spirit return.

I find the above comments interesting and more than a little sad especially when some of the more prolific posters of the past seem to share my feelings.
What I find most interesting is Annon 3 has failed to respond to this thread - quick to post unpleasant comments when he is generating postings, but apparently keeping his head down when postings relating to him are not in adulation of his quick wit and chatty disposition!!! Whats up Annon 3 - cat got your tongue?!!!

If you look in the thread "over 100 guests in 24 hrs" Annon3's penultimate posting refers to this being his swansong which I take to mean he has finished his latest series of postings. Much as I would like to think he has given up because no one is responding to his bizarre rants, I fear there will be a return at some point, probably in the guise of Annon 4 if the forum does pick up. Hopefully should this happen he will find any attempts to post unpleasant or antisocial comments will be dealt with swiftly and decisively.

I haven't had a chance to reply with my thoughts about the forum but will do so later...
JohnP...Annon is still a member as far as I can see and has yet to terminate his membership. If he does start posting unpleasant stuff, of course we should deal with him accordingly, though I am reluctant to take action (e.g. banning) without a discussion with Ali or another moderator. On that subject, if you are still willing, can I suggest you send her a PM proposing yourself as a moderator?

grumpy old gits in france, dominated by what we had for tea and my children are wonderful. Don't knock other sites just because you personally don't like the content. Each to their own after all.

I have not suggested Annon3(or 4) should be banned, just that should he post in the future he should not be allowed to upset or insult other members or post material which puts the forum in a bad light. If the only way to stop him doing this is to impose a ban then this should be given due consideration. As far as putting myself forward as a moderator, I am waiting to see firstly if there are enough active members willing to support the forum and secondly that at least one other member will put themselves forward and that you will willing to continue albeit in a reduced capacity(timewise) It would also be good to hear from Ali, as far as I can see she has not signed in since November 10th. Is she just busy or has she lost interest altogether? As she started this forum I think the decision to continue must lay with her. I am happy for the moment to wait and see what transpires. If there is to be an effort to re-launch the forum it should happen in the new year, everyone is busy this time of year. We can however use the next few weeks to continue to register interest and gather suggestions for changes/improvements.

Banning should be a last resort. However, to edit out posts which we deem to be in violation of forum rules is difficult to do and still have the thread make sense. A better option might be just to lock out the thread altogether.
Ali, has been very busy of late, training, taking exams and working. She has a full personal life too, if she doesn't respond in due course, I'll contact her via Facebook. I'm happy to continue as a moderator and I may be able to be 'online' more than I think.
I too, am happy to wait until the New Year (not 1st of January) to see what develops. Another moderator would be a good idea but we may end up with a forum of moderators who are the only posters...I don't think we are as busy next week,so I'll see what might be involved in contacting members who have posted in the last year with a 'reminder'...

Each to their own after all. as a former member of what started out as go brittany, gogif has gone the way of many forums that become dominated by a very small number of posters who knew each other outside the forum and killed off any view that was/is against their little clique.Regardless of what the subject is.

No, meldrew, it's not in response to your taunt that I've come out of retirement to reply now:
Like lib I sigh. But also think that some progress is being made, at last, after umpteen futile threads analysing, blaming, sitting on hands, dithering, etc etc...
Even the most hate-filled member concedes that you can't pin it all on me. This is progress.
Given a mandate by Ali to post whatever I wanted, I've done just that. But that mandate has expired. Ali's done a runner and now you're taking charge. Good. At last you're setting out to do something. Progress.
Establishing groundrules, including deleting absolutely everything you don't want, is a no-brainer. I've urged you to do that in the past, but you've dithered.
Get off the idea that by banning me, or anyone like me, you'll solve your problems. Far and away the greatest challenge before you (IMO) is attracting enough people to make a party.
Like you I'm misty-eyed about how the forum used to be. The likes of Britchick, troll, Ali and others are no more and the World's moved on. But you've still got the likes of bisdu, who, for all her hate, I salute for the sheer effort she's made.
