Not growing them again. What a waste of time n effort. Nurtured loads of plants in the GH, planted them out and everything has eaten them for the past 2 months. Poor things have had no chance. So yesterday in a fit of fury I pulled them all up and gave them to the hens grump grump. Replaced then with pump kins instead. We have a few pigeons around and millions of sparrers; I think it was them.

I've always grown my peas/mange tout direct in the soil, never bothered starting them in greenhouse, you do have to cover them up till they start shooting etc and then I usually put a few old CDs hanging amongst the sticks to keep the pigeons off, usually works wonders for me.

A word of advice that we received from an old French guy - when you have planted your plants (anything which pigeons might like to eat ie anything green!!!) put a thin string/twine around a few sticks not far from the crop (around the edge as well as in a bit of a criss-crossy pattern) & they won't touch them. This has worked for us with caulis (last year) & peas this year - were almost muched to the floor however after a few days with string they are coming along nicely. Mrs FG xx

Never had any luck with peas at all. Planted them straight into the ground two years running ... they grew to about 4 or 5 inches tall and then gave up, not eaten, just died. This year I started them in my mini greenhouse... didn't even germinate!!!!!!

Indeedy you are all quite right - should have protected them really. I did do when they were little by using cut off white 25L petrole containers as mini-serres. Didnt think of using string and also CDs, I suppose if it was pigeons they wouldnt like hitting string on the way in...... good thinking Mrs FG and Cobra. I've a bag of frozen ones in stock - they'll do The fine ones from Carrfour are brill, much like we were used to in the UK, small and sweet and no shelling needed.
