A couple of years back BartyB brought some asparagus seeds along to a plant swap we had in Dinan and both myself and Mad M planted them, we both got sparagus plants and lots of them as a result.
As a result, 2 years on, I've only just planted mine out into the garden from their pots. On unpotting I found that they have some lovely strong roots so although I don't expect (and won't cut) and crop this year I really think there may be a result next.
We do have some more mature sparagus from lovely elfyX to tide over in the meantime too.
Any road erp, I was reading my books about sparagus before I trenched them and found that it's recommended to pull up the ones that flower and seed coz there are the wimmen and their continual flowering and seeding will make the spragus beds grow out of control.
So - top tip - if you have an asparagus bed and you see flowering plants dig them up and compost them to leave just the males growing (unfortunatley males in this instance do prove to be useful)

I don't even know what an asparagus flower looks like yet... I'm leaving mine for 2 more years before cutting cos they only germinated last spring and have to leave for 3 years before tucking in. Now if I hadn't spent all these years umming and ahhing about whether to have an asparagus bed or not I'd be eating them by now. ;D

You'll still find some sparagus roots in places like Bricomarche at the moment, they're strong ones so I guess sparagus next year if planted this year? Even so, like MM I kept on meaning to plant it but never did and should have.
Can get canned/bottled sparagus all year round in s/markets too and I'm I have seen some frozen but there's nothing like a bit of fresh.....
