Looks like an annual Lavatera that has grown very big. Could well be, Sally. I can't find anything quite like it on the internet. I'll probably carry a leaf or two everywhere I go for the next few days..........

We need to send LK round to take more close up photos to see if there were any signs of flowers! Watch this space, am probably going again tomorrow. My friend and I both thought it could be something hibiscusy or mallowy - it does have lavatera like leaves but they are HUGE, and the single stem confused us too. What a great idea - a weekly plant ID question! Weeelll .... I have two hibiscus shrubs, and the leaves look very different.........

the stem reminds me of japanese knot weed, ive seen a lot of it here , the french think its of the bamboo family whereas it is not! its a virilant and very nasty invador! have a look into if that might be the case.
