Looks like a small fatsia (not sure of spelling) to me they grow huge and give out lovely big seed heads Sometimes known as "Castor oil plant"

That's what I thought, Fatsia Japonica, but I don't have one so don't know what the stem/trunk is like. It's not a fig or a liquidambar.

I've googled Fatsia j and it's not that either as that's got different leaves. Now I'm stumped. ;D

All I can state with any authority is that it has 5 lobed palmate leaves and I've googled a load of them and don't have any idea. Can't actually tell if it is a sapling (one year whip) with strangely huge leaves or a shrub which hasn't branched out either! I love these plant IDs though! I think the leaves are too big for mallow/lavatera unless it's a specific variety that I don't know.

Could it be a Lavateria? Although they usually grow more bushlike unless trained into a 'tree'.......

We need to send LK round to take more close up photos to see if there were any signs of flowers!

We need to send LK round to take more close up photos to see if there were any signs of flowers! Watch this space, am probably going again tomorrow. My friend and I both thought it could be something hibiscusy or mallowy - it does have lavatera like leaves but they are HUGE, and the single stem confused us too. What a great idea - a weekly plant ID question!
