title says it all lol A first I have rented a house with a garden and it has a real lawn! Not a old piece of field you mow or an extremly large patch of weeds you mow........ It has shrubs, flowers, trees, and a veg patch full of weeds........ So there will be lots of stupid questions to follow as me and gardening are new to each other. I have noticed some trouble areas already so expect lots of questions shortly.

I have a veg patch full of weeds too! So do I - am planning an assault on it all this coming week. Em - can you tell what has been growing there? Not too silly a question, as you will need to rotate your crops, so if there is a clue as to what was where before the weeds took hold (assuming that veg was grown recently-ish) it will give you a start to plan for the spring All the best in your new home LK (and Mr LK, lol)

No clues as no veg been grown in it this year I can tell! Not that big a square so a spade for digging. I was thinking should I not put some product down to kill off bad bugs in soil before planting root crops?

You're a tease and a temptress, Em, and I like that in a woman. In a man, less so....
And thanks for 'doing a simson' here. There's a great deal in the questions you pose. In years to come the Scriptures will be re-written:
"And Em she did tease and she did tempt. And the Anoraks they did become frenzied. And they did run amok......
Best wishes

Use whatever you can get hold of to improve your soil over winter. ( manure, green manure, compost) then try a few things next spring. If there are any obvious pests, we'll all put our heads together to find a natural solution!!!!!

Gotta agree with troll there, Em, and you don't have to spend any money.
Nows a good time to turn attention to the rest of the garden, if it's a bit overgrown. Shrubs which have lost/are losing their leaves could be cut back, if they're spilling onto the lawn or crowding each other out. Wouldn't worry about the finer points of pruning, just cut back to a branch lower down the stem.

A few chickens pecking over it would do the trick and manure it at the same time. Agree with the others, just leave it be. There will always be some nasties in the soil/air/wherever - that's why we are always battling some problem or other. Give it a good dig over the course of the winter and if you can get hold of any compost to add to it all well and good!
