Good Luck in your new home, Em.I prefer a fork to a spade-a lot lighter to use and breaks the ground up.

Tinkerbell, I can't tell you how much I agree with you when it comes to using a fork, instead of a spade.
On a weedy patch of ground a fork will get in under the roots and ease out the weeds much easier than with a spade.
When it comes to weeds there are only two types to worry about: those you don't want and those you really don't want. Perennial weeds such as nettle, dock, grasses and buttercup are the ones you really don't want. And this is a good time to fork them out and start the tidying up.
So Em, how do things appear to you now? Does it make sense and does what people say fit want you intend to do? What are your thoughts so far?
Best wishes

Agree with fork, also it doesn't chop up those roots and make two (or more) of everything.

Nettles can be a good thing, as well as a pain. If you have space you can use the leaves as either a fertilizer or a weedkiller depending on the final dilution, apparently, as never tried it! Good luck & happy growing! Mrs FG

I make purin d'ortie and I use it as diluted as a fertilizer and more diluted I also use it to spray against aphids.
