Have you tried to get updates? I have found that I have sometimes inadvertently come across xp that may not be absolutely genuine and yet have found that updates have been allowed by Microsoft.
You will need Sysprep.exe and use that to do an .inf file. There is a copy of sysprep.exe in xp Service Pack 2, never looked to see if its in SP3.
Its a lot of messing and sysprep is mainly used for an Admin guy to clone xp installations so as to automate installation across lots of machines.
Normaly microsoft are not too bad in allowing an operating system to be used across two machines, ie a laptop and a normal machine in single ownership. When in difficulty and have had updates denied I have spoken to Microsoft and told them it is a repair setup on a machine or replacing an operating system on a new machine to replace a scrapped one.
Of course this has always been using genuine MS products...........if norty means a foreign rip off then I would not of course know...
ps most system builders would let the customer get the updates themselves, ( time is money and it applies mainly to small builders not mainstream with pre installed OS and only recovery dicks for reinstallation) as of course the majority of customers would be internet enabled to get activation.
ps this is an open forum and may be viewed all
pps BB and Keef will also have a view on this

However as I’m running a norty copy of XP on top of a legal copy of W7, I cant see as I’m going to bankrupt MS. Having said that, do I need to update it, is my W7 OS protecting me?, i.e. is everything going though W7, (via VMWare Player) or am I open to threats? A little knowledge etc ……….
