Ha! Getting back to the topic who saw France vs Romania?. Where is Romania and is it where gypsies come from?? Have they been persecuted throughout history and to this day, like the Jews???
All human drama is contained in 'The Game'. Nobodies like Romania tried the best they can. Sorrow is what I feel for their goalkeeper.
It helps to have played the game to see the drama, and skill in it. I don't 'get' opera because I haven't been musically educated, but I concede that those who have can get more out of it....
There's none so blind as those who refuse to see. As those who refuse to concede. Whose hostility is born of ignorance, not wisdom. The little guy going into a crunching tackle with a big guy is a hero. Even the biggest numpty can see that. And go on to admire him for his pluck. If nothing else take that from 'The Game'. Then take it into your wider life. Never again will you be so blind. Never again will you fail to concede that there are two sides to every story....

Didn't see the game but viewed the goals on the news. Romania is an Eastern european state and while they have a substantial Romani (y) population it's believed that Romanies (or Tigani in Romanian, hence Tsigane in French) originated in Northern India. My stepdaughters partner is of Romany descent.
Though we did play soccer in secondary school, I wasn't blessed with the ability or the physical prowess to be proficient. I played for the third team and with the cruel, perverse humour of adolescent schoolmates, was put in goal because I was the shortest boy in the class. Sadly Annon, I saw little drama, just the ball being lofted over my head to disappear into the back of the net.

Sonetpete your early experience of the game may've tainted your view, may've warped your mind. Now is the time to reconsider.....
England 1, Russia 1. Cocking a snoop at all those who hate 'The Game' (and who like me even less - what a futile waste of your emotions) I make known:
That a young bloke, aged just 22, thumped a free-kick into the back of the net and the pride of a nation did swell.
Every member of that team played his heart out. They pummelled the opposition relentlessly.
In the dying seconds of the game the Russians snatched an equaliser. We woz robbed.. No we weren't. The Russians wanted an equaliser more than we wanted to stop them. We blew it. Meanwhile the Russian Nation rejoices, and the goalscorer even more - he must still be on Cloud Nine...
No human drama then. Just a bunch of over-paid wussies kicking a ball about......

Annon, no, it didn't warp my mind or taint my view. True, I only began to support Newcastle in 1968 but I'd always followed football and continue with my support of Newcastle to this day (even if they were relegated this season).
However talented the players are, however proud they are to play for club and country, however much they play with passion, feel the exhilaration of scoring and the despair of conceding a goal, they are still overpaid for what they do. I don't think they are 'wusses' or just kicking a ball about in a random manner but if you asked them, "Would you still play for £200 a week instead of £20,000?", I wonder how many would answer yes. Those that answer yes, show real passion for what they do

However over-paid they may or may not be, sonnetpete I don't criticise them for doing exactly what I would do myself, given a chance - get as much money as you can, while you can.
The same line of thought leads me to not blame immigrants for coming to the UK to get as much money as they can - I'd do exactly the same in their shoes - and have done so in Saudi Arabia where I earned a pile.

Oh, I agree. If the wages are what they are, I don't blame them for getting as much as they can. You have to consider that the the number of years that they can command top wages must be limited. On the other hand turning up for training in your Rolls Royce, Bentley or Ferrari may seem a trifle ostentatious...
(With Admin hat on) I take your point over immigrants but am aware that lots of threads on here are drifting off into more contentious subjects. I'm content to leave your post on for now, but if it leads to other off subject replies, I'll seriously consider removing posts...

Glad you think so sonnetpete. Wouldn't mind if you deleted my off-topic remark (which was only intended as another example of why I've no problem with footballers' high wages).
It must be good for would-be new members to know that the forum is well-run.
