Clearing out my computer room this morning and found a motor manual for an Austin A40. This was the model I learnt to drive in in the 1960's. Cannot believe how small it was plus only 48 bhp from a 1098cc engine. I failed first time and on the second attempt the car I was in was brand new. Now if you are of an age you will remember how tight engines were when fresh out of the factory. Taking your foot off the throttle was like putting your foot on the brake the car slowed so quickly! Because of the above, my driving instructor told the examiner that it was a new car and he agreed to make allowances for any untoward quick slowing down! Happy days!!! Needless to say I kept the book!

I bought an A40 in 1970 for £8.00 and yes it was pale blue. It had 6 months MOT and air conditioning via the holes in the floor. The first time I braked hard both headlights fell out and dangled on the wires. I ran it till the MOT expired then sold the engine for £5.00 and scrapped the rest. Cheap motoring. I had to pay £20.00 for my next car, a Triumph herald. Happy days

The Triumph Herald had a chassis and outriggers not monocoque!
