I was speaking to someone in our local S.U.He was whingeing about the price rise of fresh milk, from €1-9 to €1-13,i said i'd be happy to pay €1-20 to continue having fresh milk,my friend and local farmer gets 30 centimes a litre, work 365 days a year, milks twice a day, pays €1800 a year Tax fonciere alone, never mind all other expenses,he just shrugged and walked away without a bye your leave or kiss my elbow, ! ! he was of course a brit.None of us like price hikes, but we need to be realistic,i think dairy farming in uk is going to be a thing of the past.

I'm sorry but it's brits over here that seem to do the most whingeing about prices,The french are used to paying more for everything in my experience,23 years full time.

I totally agree happygirl. Personally, my only supermarket gripe is the cost of cauliflowers, farmers get a few centimes but when on public sale they are often about €2 - I simply will not buy at that price, I wait till they come down to 75cents approx and buy 6 and then freeze them

Was intérestéd in this thread as i am currently in the usa. Here we are paying somewhere in the région of $2.90 per litre for ordinary milk. This is about 2.60 euros-ish. People here seem happy to pay this and I guess it gives the farmers an inventive to continue production. Can't really blame the européan farmers for protesting. PS..my blackberry for some reason translates half my textes into french..

Just looked up some info and last year farmers were getting about 17cents a pint, so 35 cents a litre....big difference between farmers price and retail..

And here in Sunny Spain yesterday I paid 1.25 euros... There are plenty of 'cheap' carton long life milk around, but we prefer to pay more for local and fresh.. Also so many different milk products around now with different additives, but again we avoid them.
Saludos, Gordon

Often hear brits saying, love french markets, all local fruit and veg, where in Brittany do they grow, mangos, pineapples etc.? Market traders buy from wholesalers mostly, same as supermarkets, otherwise would have very little stock.Used to be an old guy on the local markets,he bought eggs from Mutant, and sold them on a bed of straw in a wicker basket. !
