Thanks TC - had a go but not getting anywhere - only changing the text size - not the screen to full size (but of course I may not be doing it properly)

Just to be clear, are you saying your applications are opening in 'windowed' mode (I.E. neither minimized or full screen)?

I click the item on my homepage (a word doc for example) it opens about a quarter of the size of the screen and I have to enlarge (the square symbol) to get full screen. ps I tried clicking the flat symbol and it totally disappeared. I know it doesn't take much for me to enlarge it but its really annoying as it didn't happen before and I open a lot of things throughout the day

OK, so if you are starting programs from the desktop it works pretty much as it would in traditional Windows and if you close a program in full screen mode it 'should' start up again the same. However Windows 8 may be different, though that seems to work for me. If you begin a program as an 'app' (from the start' button) you can move your mouse arrow to the top of the screen and it will reveal a small taskbar. Move over to the top left corner and right click and a drop down list will appear with options including maximize.
I agree Windows 8 can be a bit of a pain (though I upgraded to 8.1 which I found was an improvement). I only use it when I Skype on my netbook, other than that I use Linux on this laptop.

bisdu, just as a note, Microsoft have decided to stop selling Windows 7 and Windows 8.
The advice to customers is to upgrade to Windows 8.1 until Windows 10 is available. This should help.
Sorry I cannot help further as, in spite of years of networking, programming, and supporting Microsoft products as a business, the first thing I did when retiring was to throw out all gear, books, and hardware relating to windows ........
