Unless I've missed something these reforms are regional rather than departmental. Ok, I realise that for instance Mayenne would come under the same umbrella region as Manche should these go through, but would that make a difference at departmental or commune level?
My village elected a new mayor this year. I saw very little of the old one, other than when he was in his veg plot (oh, I forgot he performed the marriage for me and my late wife). I have no idea who the new one is, or what he looks like. Maybe it's my job to go and seek him out and introduce myself. But as he's an elected official for a population of under 250 I would have thought it wouldn't be too much trouble to visit his electorate.
I'm sorry if this sounds cynical but my village has no shops, bars or even the obligitary hairdresser. It hasn't had a village fete for over five years. I sincerely hope the new mayor will be proactive and try to breathe some life into this place but I just have this feeling that the easiest way to find him will be to track down his veg plot........

Well littlemouse, I totally disagree with you. Fortunately we can all have our own opinions. Our village is very good in doing things for all. Vide greniers, music festivals fest noz and the list goes on.We have now a different Marie since we have lived in this commune and he is just as good as the other one has been.

I understood that it was a regional amalgamgamamation (can never splee that word) ... however, the next set of plans are to kill villages and join them together.......

They did this in the UK with my ex local town, it was a very big town already with several villages attached to it. Every thing went to the next biggest town up. After nearly all the town events lacked funding or were half of what we had before, the infra structure went down the pan, the villages got nothing! On the other hand the new controlling town got bigger and better christmas lights, bigger and better events made many improvements with the new increased budget because the money was not shared out properly!!!! Bear in mind to go to the next town was 30-45min in a car and over an hr by bus..........They had a lot more of the town budgets between us and them too. I hope they don't kill village councils off as they work!!!!!!

The proposed reorganisation of the regions doesn't really make that much difference its what happends at local level that is the bigger problem. But then again when the expresident is being questioned on corruption charges what hope for democracy!

They're only about 50 years behind us in the UK. Boundary amendments happened in the 70's here, when whole parishes were wiped off the map and became 'place names', not to mention the creation of new counties - Merseyside and Greater Manchester were once 'Lancashire'.
All for administrative efficiency. We can't knock Hollande for that. If it means some inconvenience to the local population that's the trade-off. Winners and losers. Those of you who knock politicians for bringing about reform do so because you're one of the losers. The intention, I'm sure, is that the greater good is served.
But on the subject of Brittany being amalgamated I think it's a no-hoper. It's like amalgamating Wales with Merseyside. A proud people will not give up their distinctive identity. Expect tractors spraying government buildings with slurry very soon......

Remember it wasn't that long ago, they tried to abolish the teaching of the Breton language in schools, deeming it 'obsolete'. But it came back to bite them in the ass;)

Bite them in the arse how? By it's re-introduction in to the French curriculum. The Bretons it would appear, do have a lot of fight in them, and a voice. Many voices in fact!

I think you will find that it is not a compulsory subject in the school curriculum and not taught outside of brittany.Similar situation to welsh.
