No idea LM I was chatting to a staunch Breton yesterday evening trying to ascertain what he thought about the region change for Brittany in particular. I must admit I'm still not enlightened as to why it should cause an issue - the result of my conversation with him appeared to be that it was the name change that irks and that Nantes is wanted but not the rest of PdlL .....

Who were you asking littlemouse?
I spoke to some of my Breton neighbours, and they don't think it will happen either. Something else Hollande has thought up to get into he news me thinks.

Anyone who would answer really. I see this as a move in the right direction.Better still would be reducing the number of mayors and town halls, along with cutting the number of terms a mayor can have as mayor, this would not only save money but reduce fraud, nepotism and increase democracy locally.

I'am sorry to say I don't agree. Our Mairie is brilliantly run, Help is there for people who need it and also people will know if help is needed. You don't get that if you don't have this in place. How about helping in your local commune so you can have a say.

Your mairie might be wonderful, mine isn't, ruled by the same mayor for three terms, thats eighteen years, plus all the years he was a mere counciller makes for one of the worst kinds of politicians. Why would I want to help in the local community?I am registered to vote and use that right, besides working seems to take up an enormous amount of my time. Just as an aside Ive lived in France for 22 years and lived in 8 different communes, don't make the mistake of thinking I 'm fresh off the boat

Not at all littlemouse, does it make a difference how long you have lived in France? I lived in the uk as a foreigner for 30 years does it make any difference me thinks not. You can stand as councillor yourself and make a difference. Helping in your community doesn't take loads of time.

Can't claim to be of long duration, only got off the boat 9 yrs ago but it does appear to me that all the little communes around and about where I live are fiercely proud and, I'd suggest, jealous of their perceived exclusivity/superiority. Whilst all seem more than happy to help each other out can't imagine any of them would be prepared to relinquish their individuality in favour of amalgamation with a neighbouring commune. Think maybe Mr 'ollande is going to have a bit of an uphill struggle on this one, but then again what do I know?

It makes a difference.Size of communes that I have lived, worked and voted in etc. Saying you can help in your community to have your voice heard is quite frankly laughable.Standing for the council in my commune means being on a list, because you vote for a list not a person.Which means you have to affiliate to a local party. Reform at local level is well overdue,a need to break the mafia style hold that many mayors have would go a long way toward a more democratic system.Reducing the number and length of terms that you can serve would help after all the presidents term is only five years.

The small commune mayors are usually very good, friendly and well run, the bigger you get the harder it is......... Comparing my last village to here which is a town, I would love to go back for the community spirit, the events in the village, the well run services, if you have a problem we are here to help, but for the infra structure I am better here so are the children. If Holland could make communes for village sized areas it would be good but that makes jobs, which means more cost so never going to happen. I really don't think changing Depts is going to do that much, it may make things harder for instance if you have to go get documentation and you live in St Brieuc they closed your office and the one in Nantes stayed open.............
