Lot of controversy going on with the opposition this week. Nasty people, personal comments - can't people express an opposing opinion without turning nasty and making it personal? Earlier this week a poster asked simply whether anyone knew the approximate waiting time for nurosurgery at Rennes - this led to a free for all of people having a virtual punch-up on line and none of it much to do with answering the question. I felt sorry for the poster - who is presumably ill - and sadly, I did something I could never have envisaged doing unless hell freezes over and reported it as abuse - it was deleted. Right now there are a couple of free for alls going on.

Let's face it, since the 'other side' altered their sites to allow you to access any French departmental group it's opened it up to all and sundry who either hijack a thread to provoke and argue or begin a contentious thread which is bound to be polemic. In fact I sometimes think they are the only people who are on there. It's really sad that people can't accept that we may have different points of view or may actually know that what's been quoted as gospel is...well, plain wrong.
Loads of times I've just gone onto another site rather than get involved. Personally I'd ban any discussion of politics, law or religion on specialist forums. I'm sure there are lots of sites on the internet where these can be discussed (argued over). I think I've mentioned before, I contribute very regularly to a satellite enthusiasts forum and discussion of those three subjects is banned. Any attempt to do so will get you a suspension if not a total ban from the site.
A forum is only as good as the moderation on it, on the 'other side' it varies wildly as BC has pointed out. Anyway, I'll put away my soapbox now...

There are one or two names which keep cropping up who are clearly wind-up merchants. I normally don't get involved in discussions unless it is to give helpful advice. Some one did start a thread about having a thatcher day(obviously a wind up) and that took off. I did say I hoped she was nice and warm where she is now, but that got deleated so they obviously didn't want my contribution.

They have deleted the other threads I was refering to too. One was a rather personal attack on an individual who posts on there regularly.

As a refugee from the other side I would never again make the mistake of asking a question on that forum. With a few notable exceptions the majority seem to take delight in slashing & stabbing each other, with gusto. A long time ago I asked if it was possible to buy pork with crackling here - big mistake, clearly I was one of those who come over expecting the French to conform to my expectations; why didn't I stay where I was if all I wanted to do was to eat English style; apparently I was typical of the type of expat who gave everyone else a bad name etc etc etc etc.
I took the hint and deleted myself.

Hahaha, pork with crackling! We like to buy ours at a local farmers market and we order it beforehand as the lady says (in French) ah, you Eenglish, you like the fat and the rind left on' and she finds it very amusing as we pay the same per kilo but buy the bits the French don't generally want:D I once had a post deleted on the 'dark side' for mentioning Swiss chocolate cos I am half Swiss..........

Ah.............pork crackling...........ummmmm
We have French friends who love pork scratchings - always bring them from the Uk for them its become a joke and in return I seem to get a lot of piggy trinkets - piggy torch - piggy keyring...
Have you noticed too that people on os are starting to preface their threads with phrases like "i'm sorry if this has been asked before' Or " I'm not trying to start and argument.."
- it looks like others have had your experience Southpork - such a shame really.

The favourite is " If you don't like it in France, why don't you go back to the UK" It seems that some on "the Dark Side" think that your opinions, on anything, should have stayed on the ferry. I will say though bad manners on the internet is very common, there is a Memories of Poole and Bournemouth thing on Face Book at the moment, which has degenerated into homophobia and other nasties. Seems some find sensible conversation and sharing of nostalgia impossible.
