Nope not a chateau by any means - just a normal renovated stone longere ex farmhouse with barn outhouse and a 2.5 acre paddock, with only one neighbour. Second home owners have to pay both Fonciere and Habitation in full and do not receive any rebate or reduction whatsoever. Both Fonciere and Habitation have gone through the roof lately - if I could see the money being spent to improve or better local facilities then fine ........... but can't, the local council don't even bother to trim the hedgerows down my way or cut the grass ......... I do it. Time to check out neighbouring area rates and find somewhere cheaper or that doesn't rip you off The taxes have doubled since my original purchase 6 years ago

Does seem very steep Wibble, I can't discern rhyme or reason re the Fonciere. I've spoken to some neighbours with similar properties to mine and they are paying much less, the only people that seem to be paying more are those like you with holiday homes. At least we get the grass and the hedges cut. Might be worth paying a visit to your Marie next time you are over?

Fonciere tax I believe is based on personal income and as such permanent residents may obtain reduction based on their annual income - so for second home owners there's no discount and you have to pay the full amount.
Habitation is based on land and house size and services provided to your area and includes 131 euros for TV licence - I know folks in other regions with similar size and much larger properties who pay far less than I do and are on mains drains and have refuse collected from their house :-(
Bah Humbug :-( Dear Mayor and your robbing council .............. may not be the best way to start my complaint but it does feel good to say it :-)

Well yes, I take your point, but I was thinking more along the lines of a gentle reminder that the grass & hedges grow down your way too. If your neighbour is resident maybe he/she would be interested in accompanying you. Thanks for the info re the basis of the taxation, much appreciated.

Lucky you Sabjac, do you know why? Do the authorities ever honour us serfs with an explanation? The more I read the more I confuse myself particularly so since I'm relying on translation sites and am losing the essence of the script, equally, think I'm losing the will to live so am just going to leave this for the time being and ready myself for the upcoming seasonal jollies. Ho Ho Ho
Thanks again folks for your input.

We had someone round last year to look at the house.Plus I do believe it has something to do with your income as well.
