There is a similar thread to this running on "the other" forum. I cannot believe some of the replies on there. Several are saying basically "if you can't afford to live here, go home" and others are calling Pensioners who are claiming WFA, scroungers.
I find these single minded, arrogant and selfish responses quite unbelievable. Everyone's situation is different and judging people by your own situation in making sweeping statements like these show a total lack of understanding.
I will be 60 later this year and have been here nearly 10 years. Previously both my wife and I lived and worked in the UK, we paid taxes on PAYE, NI payments, 17.5% VAT on nearly everything we bought, we both smoked then so paid extortionate taxes on every packet of cigarettes we bought and ran two cars so were ripped off by the government on every litre of fuel we purchased. We never claimed child allowance, unemployment benefit, housing benefit etc. I worked for 35 years and my wife 40. 3 years after we arrived in France, my wife died, two weeks after her 60th birthday so she drew just two weeks pension. I have been struggling ever since on half her company pension and what ever I can make as an Auto entrepreneur, paying cotesations on what I earn.
I have signed the petition and if there is a chance to claim WFA when I reach 60, I will do without a quarm. Why the hell shouldn't I? Just because I live in another member state of the EU where winters are just as cold as the UK and heating oil more expensive last time I looked. Some people need to get over themselves and stop tarring everyone with the same brush.

If I understand you correctly you retired to france at 50. We came to France when I was 50 with enough to support ourselves. I have renovated the house we bought and changes of circumstances beyond my control have meant I have taken work to supplement my small income.

It's hard for a lot of ex-pats here in France and elsewhere, hard to keep enough coming in to clear the bills.
I find it such a shame that personal insults are thrown around on forums when people do not know each other, assume lots and hide behind their computer screens.
The written word does not carry real emotion or body language, assumptions can be mistakenly made.

Well said Ali. The hobby forum I belong to has a general section but specifically bans discussion of politically based threads. I know this subject deserves discussion and we all can only support healthy democratic debate.
I joined this forum to find a haven from the sniping, name calling and polemics of other ex pat forums. You only have to look at a couple of pages of posts on 'there' to see how this subject has descended into the usual chaotic written ping pong of extreme views. Lets try and keep this forum from sliding that way.
