Ok, thanks wibble. I'll have a play with the compact and get a benchmark from that before deciding anything. It's 30 years since I last bought a lens so I'm ready to be surprised by how far everything has come on!

O.K then what camera or camera gadget / accessory did Santa bring you or get a bargain in the "sales" ?C'mon spill the beans - pros and cons give us a review or do you have a new gadget with so many buttons you don't know whats what ??I treated myself to a new tripod - a Giottos MTL 9361 B with a 5001 three way head - Have to say I have been looking around for a while to replace my 20 year old faithful and borrowed one of these from a work colleague - its easy to set up for landscapes, macro, desk-top and studio work and most importantly for me can extend to 6ft in height Cons - maybe not the lightest but any lighter and stability would be an issue especially with a long lens. Also purchased a bag for it - be careful because there are a few bags on the market most of which cannot accommodate both the tripod and head unit - I found the Giottos AA1253 was spot on to fit everything in If you're looking for a tripod - I would strongly recommend either a Giottos or Manfretto unit - cheaper are available but you get what you pay for

Well, I 'copped out' and bought a second-hand Finepix for nuppence, seduced by its portability and not having a camera phone, just to get a certain job done..
The buttons are too small for a man's hands. It's too small to have any 'working weight' and to handle without camera-shake.
I now know I need something chunky on a tripod. Revert to Plan 'A'. Thanks wibble.

I got a new little camera at Christmas which I've not tried yet, don't expect it to be anything spectacular but it was free! lol. Was back in England in the office for a few days and throughout the year the girl that handles purchasing collects gifts from our various suppliers that come with certain orders. She gets all togged up in festive outfit and on the last day of work before Christmas does a "roll up roll up" tombola. I won the camera and a cool bag. Its a Vivitar underwater camera. Basically a little camera in a waterproof detachable case. Not even sure what model it is right now ... must get it out the box and give it a go, underwater sounds perfect for the brittany weather.

I have a monopod, 4 section with a quick release head. Very good bit of kit bought on sale from john lewis. Comes in very useful when you don't want to carry around a heavier tripod. Took a chance on a tripod from Aldi, last spring, not much difference from expensive models. Has a 360º head with quick release and spirit levels, 4 section, centre leg with hook, foamed grips on each leg, gets up to eye level, been used a lot this year, and all for around £20.00.
ps bag included.
