Ali - that isn't macro you can easily do some "macro" style photos with a standard 18-55mm lens but you must take it off auto focus and manually turn your focusing ring as far out as possible and then fine tune the focus onto what area you want sharpest its a big step to take but you will get much better results and a better sense of achievement once you leave that auto setting behind and simply use aperture priority to start with

O.K Here's a thread for all your technical questions regarding your equipment (camera) when posting it would be a good idea to post what camera you have (please include model ref) My camera is a Canon 500D. Lenses = Canon 18-55mm kit lens, Sigma 70-20mm f2.8, Canon 50mm prime f1.8. Interests in no particular order: Motorsport, Architecture, Nature.

Ali try using your 'long lens' for macro.

Ali - a 50mm prime lens is often the most economical useful lens you can buy - often with a good quality glass lens and an f of 1.8 using your feet as a zoom is cost effective

Must admit the best 'macro' shots I can get is with the 55-200mm and when I did the 'chrome ball' photo for the first time ever I actually looked at the marker on the lens and it was as close to 105mm as it could have been. I think I'm missing something on Macro. Have tried the manual focus set both on camera and on the lens (at the same time) but still have to be a few feet away to even manually focus. The great thing about all of this is that for one I'm now looking more into how I'm using the camera, asking questions and experimenting. Wait for it - the next questions will be about ISO and F settings

Ali, the 55/200 you have will not focus closer than 1.1 metre 3.6 feet.
Will post a bit more later when i get time, but most of us snapping here are really into close up rather than true macro. Not that it matters. Will post about using tubes or reverse lens try to make it simple and not boring to the people who understand the tekky bits.
