We do.
Neighbour had 1000's of litres of heating oil syphoned (spl) from his tank - he suspected local GdVs at the time.
He and we share a 'drive' we're the only ones down our 'cul-de-sac' and he has a GSD on guard and many lorry delivery drivers wont get out of their cabs (although she - the GSD - is as soft as a cowpat)
But we still lock-up........

Keep everything locked and don't leave anything out, even if you only pop to the shops. Thieving has been increasing rapidly with all sorts coming from the towns and cities for the rich pickings of isolated properties in the countryside. Even with neighbours, items go missing, just read the local press. I even keep the door locked during the day when I am inside althoughthe dog barks if anyone comes up the driveway and I only open a downstairs window to speak to them if I don't know them. With unemployment so high, all sorts now are resorting to petty thieving and the local gendarmes told us years ago that if you are burgled, visit the local depĂ´ts ventes and see if the items have turned up there. If you have an outside tap or electric socket, make sure the electric is off at the box and for the tap, fit one that needs akey to turn it on again - these items get stolen too!

That's sad to read how things have changed, but I guess it's a sign of the times.
Six or seven years back when we ran the gites near Dol we never locked up and half the guests used to go out leaving doors wide open with cameras, computers etc inside. Touch wood we were never burgled despite being in a secluded spot.

know the feeling lol-- never used to lock the house or the motor-- then came back to uk from Grenada--- and yup-- a case of having to literally nail everything down--- sad world to come back to-- Even here in Russia --its lock it away or loose it-- the double doors to the apartments are steel in steel frames and serious chunky locks-- and the blighters still break-in and nick stuff--even on the building sites-- it was amazing to see just how much materials was lifted away on a daily basis-- even by the -- cough-- security guards - I remember a couple years ago --doing a complete rebuild/refurbishment for a russian business man here to his datcha-- he took delivery of 86 square meters of laminate flooring for me to fit-- delivered on friday afternoon and next morning I arrived to find a really peed off owner-- all of it gone plus tools and other stuff-- he got the crims that did it-- shop delivery man and a mate of his!! but flooring gone--and 2 nice peeps had a long holiday in russia's finest--
The wheels of justice are very fast here --but only if you are well connected !!

You see weekly in the press here, huge hauls of copper, timber and other building materials knicked off building sites during the night or even builder's merchants. It never used to happen and now Queguiner locally for some time have guard dogs let loose on their property for the night. We often loaded up with gravel on a trust basis that we would return and pay for it and did so with no worries but no longer and left our mixers lying about on different sites at a time. No longer, tow bars and wheels are removed, tools are taken home at night, materials locked up and the trailer kept at home until needed. Sad sign of the times and the UK mentality following us here.
