Yes always lock up when we are out and our gates are locked at all times to stop people just wandering into our garden and to stop any door to door salesmen or Jehovahs. We have an entry phone by the gate.

Why would anyone assume that it is safer in France than the UK? Never assume anything, having said that we have left house doors and car doors unlocked in both France and the UK...that is when nothing ever happens.
Crime can happen anywhere and always has...and when it happens to you it is very personal...
I wear the T shirt 6 x in the UK.

I have Guard Geese too. Sage, Onion & Paxo patrol the perimeter, their honking alerts the dogs so anybody loitering gets the full treatment from the Welcoming Committee. They especially HATE cyclists - maybe they don't appreciate the lurid lycra look?
Since Les Françaises appear to be petrified of dogs in general I don't imagine the prospect of meeting three Dogues de Bordeaux on duty is a very tempting offer! Especially Harley - she means business!

I didn't used to lock my car at night but had a tank of diesel syphoned out of our VW last summer. Neighbours had a party and we think someone from there nicked our derv. They even cut a length of our hosepipe to nick it.

Today's paper shows figures for Brittany and that principal residence thefts and sexual violence are currently at a high rate. Makes interesting reading if you look at the attached tables

A farmer a few ks from here had his combine harvester nicked from his storage barn. Just how do you sneak a combine harvester away from under the nose of the farmer? Not exactly pocket sized or easy to disguise are they? Sounds a bit dodgy to me but maybe cos that I'm a cynical Brit???
