People 'say' that Brittany is 'posher' than Normandy, I wouldn't necessarily agree lol (ever the diplomat) but having said that the coastline of Brittany is stunning. Yes, Brittany is a bit more upmarket than Normandy LOL...too many of us rough northern people here...I do envy you the coastline in Brittany....if I had the freedom to choose again, it would be either somewhere nearer the coast of Normandy or Brittany or maybe a little further south towards the Loire valley. Having said that there are many positive things about Normandy and it's somewhere I've come to love.

THanks for those thoughts, sonnetpete and Ali. Your location Ali is very much something we would be considering as one of our reasons for moving is for quicker and easier access to visit my aging parents who are currently in the process of moving to the Bath area and we really would like to be nearer the seaside, we both miss that and it is about 3,5 hours for us to get to the coast from here. Obviously I realise this is a bit of a little of a "how long is a piece of string" question, but would you say priced in Normandy and Brittany are comparable? Here in limousin prices vary dramatically between the very sparsely populated Creuse and the Southern Correze, which runs along the popular Dordogne valley, but overall Limousin is much cheaper than the extremely popular department of Dordogne.

I get the impression (and it may only be an impression) that housing is more expensive in Brittany than Normandy. If you are looking for ferry links to the UK closest to Bath, I'd say Roscoff to Plymouth would be your best bet. Don't discount flying though, Flybe fly from Rennes to Southampton throughout the year and to Exeter in the summer. From Dinard you can get to Stansted, East Midlands and Leeds Bradford with Ryanair. Both Rennes and Dinard are a 90 minute drive for me (I live on the border of Manche and Mayenne). Caen, for the regular Portsmouth ferry crossing is about an hour and three quarter drive from here.

I'm in Normandy, not that far from the Perche /Orne border. We chose Normandy because here particularly the countryside is much reminiscent of Surrey where we came from, albeit fifty years ago before Surrey disappeared under concrete & got eaten alive by London encroaching on it. Its beautiful, green & peacefull here and only about 90 mins from Caen so the family are always willing to visit. I had my granddaughter here for three weeks this summer - better she's here running free than cooped up in suburbia.
I'll never go back there to live because I'm afraid I'd go crackers with the noise, hideous traffic, the stifling crowds & all the rest of it, not to mention what I'd do with my menagerie. I'm a frog and thats that seeing as my maiden name derives from an Upper Normandy town - I returned to my roots you see and much as it narks my Dad he is a heriditary Frog too whether he likes it or not haha!!!

Hi Noodle I have lived in Brittany for close to 22 years, Morbihan for 8 years .Finistère for 14 years, If I were to choose where to live in Brittanny ,then Southern Brittany coastal areas would win by a mile. Somewhere along the Lorient Vannes Auray axe.30 kms inland maximum. Its warmer and the people are friendlier.

THanks everyone, I am setting up a notes folder, (yes I am a saddo ) with all your comments in so I a can start to build up a picture and look at all the considerations before the earnest searching starts. Thanks again for the input and still be delighted to hear anyone else's experiences, thoughts etc One other thing any good website recommendations? I have tracked down many of the tourist board ones on FB but want to make sure I have not missed any good ones , merci! I have also realised that I am taking this thread completely off topic, sorry, if you want to split these posts or me to start another thread please give me a nudge
