I would also suggest a wired mouse or even a wire less mouse than a touch pad they break and are at times a nightmare!!! Not used your antivirus program as I found avast which is free and works.

As I read this thread I am assuming that it is a laptop with an inbuilt tracker pad 'mouse'.
When I still bothered with Windows stuff I saw a lot of problems with track pads.
The 'standard' cure for a frozen pointer was to shut down the machine remove the battery for a few minutes the refit the battery and reboot.
Go to the program for the 'mouse' adjustments and reset to your preferences.
Hope this helps, but I could be reading the thread wrong.
ps happens a lot on HP and Acer laptops.
pps I do occasionally have problems with Lady S and her HP, ......... find little bits of biscuit crumbs under the track pad ....... blow out with air or at worst get the vac.

Lib - yes it has an inbuilt racker mouse pad. Actiually when i first had the big problem and it froze I did remove the battery, also tried to tinker with the adjustment.
I thinks its a "friday afternoon" computer
know what you mean about the biscuit crumbs though (but not on this machine)
