Hi Sam, You did not say what version of windows you are using.
If you have two or more accounts (users) on this system and his is not the administrator then the administrator account can reset his password (add new password).
If you have made a password reset disk along with your other restore disks then you may use that to restore the locked account.
If none of these conditions apply then officially you have to reinstall the operating system.
If the operating system was originally installed in a partition separately from your data and programs this can be done without losing your data or programs. If all the data and programs exist on a backup disk that is up to date and current then after reinstall the backup can be applied.
It is possible on some versions of the operating systems to be able to put the system back to a restore point before the password was added, the easiest way to do this is with a boot disk to fire up the system and then attempt to do a restore point some time in the recent past.
There are other ways of doing a password bypass, but this is more in the hacking / cracking line and should not be posted on an open forum.
BottomBurp may be of more assistance.......
To give you a more detailed answer please tell us the version of windows.

WOW! for once I know what everyone's talking about on a techie discussion. My sis had this problem a couple of months ago & she told me her OS and I googled and found a solution - so, the OS is REALLY important to know

Wow!! thanks for all the response It is a Compaq Presario running on Windows XP (SP2 I think) The trouble is someone had a diddle with it not so long ago (after the last time he broke it) & I'm not quite sure what was re-installed I am sure the guy who fixed it gave me some backup discs but am not quite sure where they are? I'll have a good root around tomorrow & see what I can find. There is only one account on the machine & its my sons heehee I like the sound of the hacking & cracking

I used this a few times. Seems to work ok read about it here: pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/gr/ophcrack.htmdownload it here: sourceforge.net/projects/ophcrack/There is oodles of ways of cracking XP and the trick is to try and find something from (or being served by) a reputable source. (like sourceforge.net for instance) You have to burn a cd/dvd (a specific sort of file called an .ISO or disk image) for this one but once you have the disk you can amaze all your friends with how clever you are. Do you have a windows 7 machine in the house? Windows 7 now burns .ISO's without the need for any other software... just right click and burn to disk. any problems, you know where we all are
