hi all, ive a concern.............. what if either england or france pulls out of the EU? now there are those of us desperate to sell our houses and get out of here BUT what if the above happens? im thinking english people either wont want or wont be allowed to come and live here as they have done since we became members of the EU and therefore had the right ............ i heard murmers that now france are thinking of comming out ? via le pen? its no good saying well youll have to sell to french people because they dont generally purchase in our price range and no thats not us being greedy with high price , its on the market for 210,000 euros plus notaire /agent fees if they use an agent , thats the purchase price plus the cost of renovating almost to the centime ! but im told the french wages would generally make that cost prohibitive for a mortgage for them so if we cant sell to english we are perhaps sunk ? what does everyone think ?

House prices are relevent. The market is slow and dictates the price a house will sell for, it has nothing to do with what you paid for it plus renovation costs. The housing market doesn't work like that here. Price depends on the area, size of house, and how many bedrooms it has, extras such as indoor pool. We have been looking for some where for a while but prices are still too high for us in the area we are, looking at a small 4 bed near expensive costal area starting at €145,000 for some thing not too bad, as in has kitchen, bathroom, good roof, double glazing, garage and garden, but needs serious decor change. Mickael has a good wage and we can only get a mortgage for 100,000 most french couples can have up to 150,000 maybe up to 200,000 if lucky. Lots can not buy a house unless they buy some thing with a lot of work (but then can not afford to do it up) or move to middle of no where which is much much cheaper as you are in the country side with nothing. When we last looked at a houses with work on them the state agent said for 98,000 property if we offered 75,000 she could accept straight away!!! The house isn't worth that as it needs gutting, new roof, windows, bathrooms, kitchen, next to busy main road etc lol. What has your estate agent suggested as a price?

The question of the UK coming out of Europe is so massive, I am not sure anyone has thought through all the implications ... from the UK's financial involvement in the European Space Project and the Euro fighter, the many businesses from all over the world that have based themelves in the UK as their foot in to the EU, so how it would effect us is probably way down the list of considerations for those in power. Most of Europe's citizens seem fairy disatisfied with how it currently operates. I guess people from the UK will always come across as they have always done but would need a Carte de Sejour type arrangement as with the USA and Aus etc. Given the general disatisfaction that seems to be coming from the UK I think many will still see moving to France as a way out. We have been here long enough and run a business so learnt that for those of working age France is certainly not an easy option. In the Limousin we did see a growth in house buyers from Australia over the last year or so. We sold to an English couple two of our friend sold to Belgians. (All at a generous cut on the asking price) We got less for our house than we paid for it if you take in to account the "improvements" we had made. But we were fortunate in that we were staying in France so it was all relative but it is more difficult for people going back to the UK. This is the position friends of ours are in that have just sold and they have found temporary accommodation with a view to buying in the UK at an auction to try and get the most for their money. Unsettling times for everyone! I wish you all the best with your sale.

This is a complex question full of ifs and buts. Firstly these have been European elections, those elected will serve in the European parliament and if you look at the figures and percentages for the members who represent the anti-Europe parties they are quite small and unlikely to be more than a nuisence in the day to day running of the European parliament.
The big question is will these votes hold up in the next general elections in France and the UK. The people of both countries are sick of arrogant, worthless, complacent politicians in both countries and unless they get their act together in the interveining period then probably they will be severly savaged in those elections.
I don't think that the majority of people want to come out of Europe but want their relevent countries to take back control of things like law and order, security, human rights and immigration. To split up Europe would not be good for anyone so it is a case of re-negotiation of certain treaties and get rid of this superstate mentality where people feel they have lost control of their own destiny.
If the worst happened and UK and France did break away, I doubt it would mean mass-repatiation or a huge restriction in movement between the two countries, after all there are a huge number of French living in The UK, 300,000 in London alone and the Brits are a benefit to the French economy and vice-versa.
The next couple of years will be interesting politically and I think there will be some major changes on both sides of the channel but I don't think either county is about to pull out of the EU in the short term anyway. Don't panic Captain Mainwaring, don't panic

hi emma, here is a link to our house www.rightmove.co.uk/overseas-property/property-27215208.html the agent suggested 250,000 ish so we originally had it on for 240,000 , now its on for 210,000 and we will still even then be glad to take an offer, its the equivillent of £170,000 plus notaire which we would reduce by so buyer dosent need to pay fees .

In my opinion we will never leave the eu,it was a great idea and needs tweeking,it is a wonderful gravy train for the haves as MEPs and the whole political clique would have too much to lose, also businesses that have invested millions, far too complicated for a referendum by Joe Bloggs as they will probably only see the racial issues.
