So. The grass is growing.
Not for over 20 years have I fed my lawn. I always leave the mowings on, and don't cart them off to the compost heap.
So in a sense I have fed my lawn. The mowings are recycled by the worms.
Some dandelion, daisy and buttercup have got in there. But the sward dominates, so why bother with a few weeds?
The sward dominates because I don't cut it too close. Every time we mow we weaken the grass. We might cut it hard now, in its Spring flush, perhaps down to 1", but later I prefer to cut it to 2", so as not to weaken it so much that weeds take a hold...
Obsessed as people are with the look of their lawns that they cut close, and buy into an annual weed and feed, chemical,
fussy and paranoid. The same people water their lawns in summer. Never watered mine in over 20 years...
You may have inherited a lawn over there made up of species we don't use in the UK - our lawns are famed for their superiority - so I wouldn't bother if they don't look like Wembley- they never will. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear...
If you feel that you've gotta do something about the weeds in the lawn I recommend a dedicated lawn weedkiller, and not a general 'weed 'n' feed formulation. Spraying each weed - spot control - lets the grass invade the space left by the dying weed. Do it now.
ps: 'Dandelion' comes from the French 'dents de lion' - teeth of the lion, because of the shape of its leaves - not a lot of people know that....
pps: I'm not 'settling in nicely' as suggested by proboards. They'll be telling me that I 'come here often' next. Worse, that I'm a 'profound poster'. Posting on here leaves me nervous that folk don't give two hoots. And 'nicely' is a meaningless word. My English teacher told me that 'nice' was best left to a certain type of biscuit, and that we must find other words to express ourselves...
