To be thinking about putting in seeds. The book says April, the packet says April, should I be holding my horses? Sadly my fingers do not have even a tinge of green, on the contrary I appear to be gifted in dishing out instant horticultural death to all things bright & beautiful so advice would be much appreciated.

Where? Straight in the ground, or on a windowsill or somewhere - and what is in said packet?

Initially poppies and morning glories, plan was to sow them in seed trays in the potting shed to sort of get a head start. Last year didn't sow them until April and those few that did grow on didn't flower until late in the summer. Also I really really really want a herb bed, any tips?

I'd get them in as soon as possible if I were you. Put them somewhere warm and frost free though What sort of herbs do you want to grow? Do you want them in pots or in a herb bed? You can either buy them or grow them from seed depending on how soon you want to be able to use them. I always grow basil in my polytunnel as it doesn't like wind - I grow at least one plant per tomato plant as they work as companions (I always used to do that with French marigolds, to deter the aphids - but you can't eat them!). I generally have parsley in the polytunnel all year round but grow mint, sage, origano, bay, thyme and things like that in pots in a sheltered corner in the garden

Poppies you have to put the seeds where you want them they do not respond to transplanting. My self seeded poppies have started to re appear, as have my self seeded pansies. Are seed packets english or french? If english you can put out a month earlier.

Thanks you Em & Elkay.
I've put the seeds in trays, mixture of English & French seeds, sadly had put the poppies in before I read your post Em so will just keep my fingers crossed. The herbs I would like are basil, tarragon, coriander & flat leaf parsley. I have thyme & sage in the garden - thanks to previous occupier. Will tarragon do okay outside? Do I need to put the coriander in the polytunnel?

I haven't tried tarragon or coriander outside, I usually have them in the polytunnel. I didn't know that about poppies either - thanks for that, Em

Oh phew....that's a relief....I was woken up by a barn owl screeching outside my bedroom window at 4.30am and thought it was an alien with a death ray prowling round...pleased to know it's safe now....
