Whoop whoop - mentioned not to use soapy water to get rid of norty bugs but to blow them off using .......... just water. It's the first time that I've noticed GW say something like that. Soapy water kills good bugs too! Time to take softwood cuttings and still sew basil - both of which I'll be doing over the next few days. Love the prog. Your thoughts are? ?

Ok, so I'm a dissenting voice....
I don't want you, Ali, to value the advice that softwood cuttings are good now, and that basil can still be sown now....
I want you to 'feel' these things. GW is too prescriptive, for me. It assumes that you have no intuition. It dumbs down to the floor. It makes the programme 'accessible' to all, which includes complete novices. No-one on here is a complete novice. It creates a dependency for 'advice', while re-inforcing your own perceived lack of knowledge. Horticulture is much less about 'knowledge', much more about 'feel'.
It's a little known fact that we know very little about Nature. That's why billions of dollars are spent annually researching it....
Troll, I don't believe that you buy into the personality cult. Monty Don is genial enough as a presenter, but then so am I. You just haven't seen me present yet. And so are you. Let's keep the personality cult in perspective....
Ok, rant over. If JP can rant about every despot and politician, I can go off on one about gardening programmes....

Now you're talking....
Bob broke on the scene, with his pony tail, when I was first exploring Organic culture....
He was saying things that I'd discovered for myself...
As such, I warmed to him. We like people who agree with us....
His growing potatoes in stacked old tyres was a bit kooky...
But only because it takes more effort to do it that way than 'on the flat' i.e. without earthing up...
Who, amongst us, knows what the gain is in earthing-up potatoes? It's a theoretical consideration, and logic tells me that earthing-up is not worth the trouble....
But Bob must've fallen out of favour. Relegated to the radio. I once 'guested' on Pippa Greenwood's radio show. Another tv 'personality' who must've fallen out of favour. She was all style and no substance. I disagreed with everything she said! On air! Wasn't invited back again.....
So I can't get into tv 'personalities'. They've got a job to do and they do it well. It doesn't follow that their 'product' is worth a dime.
I'd still urge anyone who derives pleasure from such programmes to see them as light entertainment. Posing more questions than they answer. Answers we will discover for ourselves. We're all better than we think we are...

I haven't sown my basil yet either. Monty is a reminder of what we should be doing. If we were not lazy. :-)
