I have this plant along my driveway and its invasive and comes up just about everywhere it can. It does have a little white flower on it and it stinks when you pull it by hand. Its not unattractive but can be a nuisance coming up where it likes.

Yah, I was going to say Houttuynia too xx Yeah right. Although you probably even have the one with the red in its leaves beside your pond, as they are quite common. It was only when Sunnymay mentioned it growing out that I thought about it and googled to see if other coloured leafed varieties existed! It still needs to flower to be sure of the ID though.

In an attempt to contribute, please let me say that there about 70,000 cultivated plants around. Some are bred from convulvulus (bindweed) so it's not such a long-shot to suggest that sunnymay's subject is related, even though it may not be the wild variety we know..
Indeed, it would help to know how the subject is spreading. Rhizomes (under the ground)? Stolons (along the surface)? It would help to confirm/eliminate possibilities. And are there any twisting stems developing - not evident in early emergence - or indeed does the plant originate from a bulb?
Leaf form and colour are weak indicators in early growth - the cool weather can influence colour - so in truth a bit more info would help nail it down.
ps: I have no idea what this plant is.

Hi,
thanks for the replies, it certainly looks like Houyttuynia, but don't know where it came from, I had it in the polytunnel through the winter, didn't get given it and certainly didn't buy it, so it's a mystery. Also havn't got any damp areas for it to enjoy, be a shame to throw it, but if Kiwi's consider it a weed! perhaps someone will adopt it.
sunnymay.
PS Thanks Madame Moorhen but your camera choices, I'm very envious.

I am going to put the cat amongst the pigeons and stick my oar in (just to throw in a couple of mixed metaphors) but it looks to me rather like a sweet potato plant

Maybe someone snuck into the polytunnel during the night and planted a sweet potato! Just as mysterious however whatever-it-is got there - look forward to seeing another picture later on when maybe it has some flowers!

I know nothing about plants but I have to say that some Bindweeds do have a similar heart shape. Fingers crossed it isn't.
