Here's some not-so-stupid thinking on this stupid subject of moon gardening.
However weak a source of light, plants will still be drawn to it, eg, a houseplant kept away from a window will still turn to that source.
The moon is a weak source of light.
But top growth requires either a) photosynthesis, or b) reserves.
Photosynthesis is not happening with the moon, not even a full moon. Trust me, technical fact.
Perennials have reserves. So an emerging shoot could extend under moonlight. But annuals don't. There's something of the perennial in all of our veg....
So moon gardening sets out to extend diurnal growth? You tell me, not me tell you....

Interesting to read about the possibility of the moon offering a source of light, however, simple diurnal growth could lead to a weakness in the plant? A stretching of resources? Little benefit/gain?
How about the moons gravitational pull? In a full moon (sun, earth moon) surely the moons gravity would pull 'leaves and stalks' however the sun then would also have an impact with its light, surely that would be the best time to plant leaves?
In a new moon when the moon is between the sun and the earth could have an effect when the moon is hidden could pull roots?
Just musing...........

Where are the comments from our moon gardeners?

Where are the comments from our moon gardeners? I never got into this to teach or preach to others. I was persuaded to run a category on it so that those who wanted to could follow the idea and get into it themselves. I was taught by the locals here and it makes sense to me when they show me or I read it in my trusty book Jardinez avec la Lune, a Rustica edition. The locals don't need a moon book/calendar to tell them; they have learnt it from their forebears over generations. I don't think it all weird and don't care if people take the p*ss and assume that I moon at the moon (ooer) or do my gardening in the dark. I know that your original question was whether to combine the two gardening categories - well, you may as well because I for one don't intend to spend the time I could be actually gardening writing on here all the things that need doing and at what time when I could actually be doing them! Having said all that, I am wasting time and need to get out and prune my hydrangea as the moon calandar book tells me I should deal with flowers or flowering plants today. Happy gardening

Well that left everyone very quiet! It wasn't the intention. I am happy to continue the moon gardening discussions but the above was just my excuse for failing to keep it going as a separate category I don't think there is enough interest to keep it as a separate category - let's amalgamate the two. if that suits everyone.

Agreed. We could widen the discussion to include organic gardening, biodynamics and permaculture too, cos they are all inter-related

The best I can do, troll, is partly agree with you. You've caught me on a good day....
For me, plant biology sits at the centre of the universe, so all of our chosen beliefs are no more than beliefs if they do not square with plant biology.
I may not be able to contribute to this or that 'philosophy'. But that might be a very good thing for the rest of you....

There is a wide body of folk-lore associated with lunar gardening, but properly conducted systematic experiments have proved the value of sowing, planting and harvesting according to the pulsating rhythms of the earth's magnetic field,( which varies with the moon phase). This is not philosophy it is lunar science.
