Is it just me or are they cr4p ? There are several large gdn centres within 45 mins drive from here and I think I can list their stock of plants from memory year in year out. I have worked within the 'industry' in the UK selling to chains and large independents and the big show of the year in the UK is GLEE @ the NEC (in September) (http://www.gleebirmingham.com/) it is fantastic, little known by 'consumers' it's mainly a show for the trade welcoming euro and international suppliers. GLEE is a source of inspiration and trade for UK garden centres. I had worked at an exhibition in Paris once too, early 2000's, and the difference between the two was amazing. More machinery in Paris and such a lack of imagination. Just watched Hampton Court Flower Show this eve and would have loved to have been there picking up the huge variety of plants on show. If it's one thing I do miss over here, it's 'proper' garden centres and nurseries If you know of one please share !!

Nurseries are what are missing here - they do exist but are hard to find and don't really advertise as such - you have to search the internet for them. There's one down on the main road to Rennes just before Betton (now lost since the new bypass) called Prial - it's just for shrubs and trees but the choice is quite good, the quality excellent and the prices far more reasonable than garden centres. Can give you more info if you like. Looking round the plants in the garden centres I lose the will to live, but this is probably a good thing really as I have no room for more plants!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the way my lavatera is absolutely A-MAZE-ING Ali!!!!!!!!! Thank you.

Yes, I remember the one at Betton before they built the by-pass used to go straight past it on the side of the main road just before a wiggly corner.
There's a new nursery opened up within 20 mins from here towards you @ St Brice, havent investigated that one yet.
Yes the Laverteara is brill isnt it, take some cuttings tho coz they don't last more than 2 or 3 years really.

Oh I'm surprised I didn't know that about the lavatera. Probably a good thing as I'd hate to see it grow any more!
How do you take the cuttings (softwood, hardwood?) and when?

We've got an excellent nursery near us - they do buy some stuff in but most they grow themselves. It is the very best place for retail therapy! and they give good advice, too - not like some of these glorified brico places where they don't even always remember to water the plants!

Superb leeks from Serres Simon, I've learnt from my neighbours not to bother growing them from seed anymore.
