Hi all just a question about our "tatie" crop
Our tatties were planted and had good green foliage come through, we then mounded them up and out of 30 planted only 9 have come through. Out of curiousity this morning I dug up one row of "tatties" to find absolutely nothing there, not even the seed potatoe. There is no sign of beetles or any tunnelling from Mulots (field mice) so I am completely flummoxed. Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks Bev

About 1/3 of my earlies disappeared without trace ,exactly the same, not even a seed left. I just assumed it was the dreaded Mulots, as they eat so much in my potager!

98% of mine are fine, I've noticed a few not appeared since I turfed up. Its odd that you didn't find any trace, not even rotten stuff.

I don't cover over all the plant when I earth up! Just the lower leaves. Maybe completely covering a growing plant with soil killed them.

Hi, I always cover all the plant and have never had any problems before, but this year's are a disaster

Must admit also that I've never covered the whole plant either. I was late earthing up this year and the soil was sodden so was especially careful not to cover the whole plant up.
BUT
Still can't understand why no rotten things were found underneath yours .....

Out of the 30 seed pots we put in , only 9 are left, dug 2 up yesterday and got 6 potatoes !!!!!!!! A FEAST FOR A MIDGET................................. I did however see what I thought was the culprit, strolling around the veggie plot.... A MOLE........... as you can imagine it strolls no more laters, Bev

I thought moles just ate worms? They do cause havoc though with their tunnels. I am not a violent person in any other way but I just LURVE blowing the moles up!!
Yesterday I started to dig up my charlottes (earlies) as I need room to plant my leeks and I spotted the first signs of the dreaded blight. I shall dig up the rest of the charlottes today - I have quite a nice crop but they are much smaller than in previous years and this is the earliest I have ever seen blight.
I will live in hope (but not mush!) that it doesn't spread to the bintje (main crop) but they are close so I shan't hold my breath.
From now on I shall change my clothes after dealing with the spuds and before going into my polytunnel where the tomatoes are. I shall spray the toms with something my neighbour gave me that is natural in the hope that the toms don't get it

I have blight on the way too, spotted some dark patches the other day.
BUT
I'm going to take the spotted leaves off and a few normal leaves, (dispose in the dustbin) to get more air circulation between the plants.
Its so damp and humid over here right now that I know the whole lot is going to succomb.
BUT for me it's too early to dig up the tatties, they're not developed fully yet so just won't keep. If the blight really takes hold I'll simply chop off all the folliage and leave the tatties in the ground to dig as and when. Done this before, results were fine.
