Not having the fruit too wet ,so the crumble mix doesn´t end up as part of it , is I think the key.

A friend bakes her crumble topping separately and hers is always nice, so I do that sometimes now depending on what fruit I am using.
Try it, Elfyx - make the crumble and bake it on shallow baking tray. It bakes faster than when on top of fruit, specially if it is on a metal baking tray. Break it up a bit once it's baked whilst still hot and then put it on top of the hot fruit just before serving.

I found this one by Jamie Oliver fool proof, but yes make sure your fruit is not too wet, but to be honest this works with compote (french children don't ask but no lumps in any thing allowed before the age of about 12!). 8oz/225g plain flour (lidls cheap stuff is best I've found!) 4oz/115g butter (important butter not marg!) 3oz/90g sugar make as normal crumb flour and fat then mix in sugar, put over fruit in a fairly thick layer. Cook at 180°C/gas4 till golden.
Best of luck!
