For five years we had no Moles at all, now within the space of a couple of months our garden looks like it's been cluster bombed. Long shot, but, does anybody have a tried and tested method of persuading the buggers to go live elsewhere

For five years we had no Moles at all, now within the space of a couple of months our garden looks like it's been cluster bombed. Long shot, but, does anybody have a tried and tested method of persuading the buggers to go live elsewhere The breeding season seems to have started early this year - probably as it is so mild. The ONLY way I find effective is to nuke the bergers with one of those petard devices. They are expensive outlay, but you only need to use one or two at the beginning of the season and once they venture back and smell a dead mole in the gallery they will berger off pretty darn quick. www.detaupeur.com/The website is very amusing, but, believe me, the device works. It is available in places like Point Vert and M Bricolage. Happy 'de-tauping'!

Ditto Elkay. Fli has one of those devices and they are brilliant. Well that is apart from when the dogs dig up said dead mole and roll in it We put a heavy terracotta pot upside down over the blower uppy thing with a heavy big stone on top so the dogs can't get to it.

I've tried, live and dead traps, poisons, smoking, gassing, barb-wire in the runs, bramble branches in the runs, dog sh*t down the hole, peeing on the mounds, vibrating solar thing's, with zero, ZERO, luck at all. I think the next step is to concrete the whole garden, paint it green, or call the US Marines. Here these are tough little bu**ers to get ride of. He Who Dares Wins.

I put mothballs down the holes and that seems to move them for a while.Cheap and easy and available at supermarkets.Must admit the little dears push them out sometimes

Moles are easy to get rid of/kill by pouring petrol down their holes/runs. Voles on the other hand seem impervious to this. Do you know if they are mole or vole hills? The hole within the mole hill goes straight down whereas a vole hill hole goes off at an angle. So says the Terminator who has 7 years experience of this. My veg patch is totally infested with vole hills which I have never had like this before so it may end up being even more of a nightmare this growing season, as previously it was only the mulot runs I had to contend with (bad enough), with just the very occasional vole hill.

The joys of growing your own veg!I always think one for us,one for the weather and one for the foragers-this way don't have to wage a constant war and spend lots on pest control.Don't think we'd ever eat it all anyway.Plus in the long term the mice etc.feed the birds of prey, snakes etc.

That's a good way of thinking Tinks, I always have too many lettuce anyway so am never unduly worried when some of my seedlings disappear down a mulot tunnel. I get more annoyed that they are constantly digging amongst my strawberries leaving the poor plants with their roots dangling in the hole of a tunnel and can't take up any moisture. I spend so much time pushing soil back down mulot tunnels and channels - BUT - on the other hand I don't have to go out at night hunting for snails and slugs, as that's one problem I don't have.

hi MM ,thinking of trying strawberries in those tall containers-been reading up on it and supposed to give a good yield.I know the voles and mice can climb but it says mesh over them acts as a deterrent.Anyone else tried it.?
