Today is a good day for planting out garlic and shallots, they benefit from a period of cold before shooting. Not sure what the norm is here in Brittany, I've always planted onion sets ( and sown onion seed) in early spring, but manure the plot for them now, they don't like fresh muck. There are so many modern varieties you can probably find some to be planted at almost anytime, but it all gets too complicated with rotating the plots, mucking , liming and watching the moon phase.

I've never seen them here, but if they are Japanese over wintering onions get them quick, because they are the best onions ever. Lucky folk in the UK can get them. They are totally hardy.
I hate the varieties (with very little choice) that are sold here in the spring as they tend to be all flat bottomed varieties which are really hard to chop and peel. So I don't bother any more.
Just wish I could get the Roscoff pink onion sets and then I would grow them again, but they don't sell them up this end.

You haven't really got a lot to lose other than a few euros for the sack and a bit of your time planting. If they don't work then you can get some more in the spring - and if they do then lucky you!
