Just Acorns and Chestnuts growing wild around here, I am tempted to plant something useful along the ditches, maybe Walnuts as Jean is diabetic and finds they help with her diet. panj - I've just planted some huge cob (hazel) nuts (6) in the hope for baby trees! If any do germinate would you like one in the post??? These ones are not common ones, the nuts are huge (by comparison). Very interested to hear how walnuts help for diabetics - diabetes is so common.

Must start eating more walnuts then! I put them in bread and cakes and a few salady things - we're never short of them here. ;D Must have picked 2,000 this year - but it's the first year that I haven't counted them - last was about 1,859 (and still got 4 bags worth left) but this year I reckon I have more!

This is only some of them...... The sun has been a godsend getting them all dried out and bagged up!

Ali, are cobnut's self sterile? Oh no !! Does this mean I'm growing 6 rotten nuts in a plant pot? Ok, will go take cuttings this week and try that too. This particular tree is the best I've ever seen for huge nuts. MM - did you really COUNT all your walnuts?

Yes, cos autumn 2004 here = nothing, autumn 2005 = about 7, the next year about 50 and the year after about 500(!!) and so it went on until 1,859 in autumn 2010. I have the note pinned to the pinboard beside my desk here. ;D Yeah I'm sad and it's all I can do to not go and count all the bagged up walnuts.......I'm having to stop myself.......

Oh and talking of saddoes...... The Terminator has collected more than 400 conkers from our two youngish trees, which are for target practice (saves him nicking my walnuts!).
