Everyone knows what conkers look like, and look at the leaves of the tree as well - use google for ID. Ali's photo is good and you know that a conker doesn'tlook like that. There's only one conker in the shell but 3 in a chataigne shell - one big and two little. Marrons have bigger nuts but basically all sweet chestnuts. Well.... I thought everyone knew not to eat Acorns, but apparently not.... so decided too much information is better than not enough. Sorry!!!

Rinky - was replying to PandJ not you! I assume everyone knows what conkers are - even when I lived for years in London we collected conkers and had conker fights.... oh well maybe not. By the way I have read about putting them on windowsills to repel spiders therefore cobwebs and decided to test this theory - so far after 2 weeks not a single cobweb or spider to be seen at all around this window - and it's normally a really cobwebby spot - so will be spreading a lot more around, probably on the outside windowsills too - as every time I clean the bloody windows the next day there are perfect spiders webs been spun overnight! (too beautiful to destroy!)

Well - I found a cobweb yesterday! Darn! But they still seem to be overall working - this is my first time testing this out but others swear by it....time will tell!

Going out today to find some Conker trees!! Not an easy task in this neck of the woods ... endless farm fields and most of the little woods/copses are privately owned and fenced off!!

Public parks or chateau grounds are your best bet - don't so often see them growing in the wild but they seem to be a favourite parkland type of tree.

Just Acorns and Chestnuts growing wild around here, I am tempted to plant something useful along the ditches, maybe Walnuts as Jean is diabetic and finds they help with her diet.
