I reckon he/she could be a Carpenter Bee, they're not agressive and are solitary, nest above ground and often in wood (you may see their tunnel entrance - about 1/2 wide or so) Then again it might be a Apis mellifera nigra - European black honey bee. Tuff one this

I would be interested to know myself! We have a lot of black bees but there are ones that are around earlier in the year which may be different from the ones about now - not really sure - and can't put my finger on it but probably because they are black they don't seem so appealing as other brown or bumble bees!

Is it black... or is it a dark purple/blue? I ask 'cos I got stung by one a while back! It really hurt at the time, and came up in a big angry red lump... but it went down quite quickly afterwards. I don't know what they are called though, sorry.

I got Piquarom from the pharmacie and it quickly takes the pain of a sting away -smells awful but a handy remedy.

Think this is the same bee, with little honey bee for size comparison. Not great photo, haven't got the time to crop it and zoom in!

Yes - I hadn't realised until I noticed the little bee in the photo as well!
I don't think there are that many of these black bees about though as I've been taking photos of bees/insects/flitty things all summer and this is the first one I've taken of one of these.
