Advice about Cookies

Please can you explain cookies.

I have been having problems recently in fact only this week with logging onto my Gmail, it kept going on about enabling cookies, why would this suddenly change? Normally if I run Glary utilities it clears problems but not in this case and I had to check the cookies twice.

PS I have vista and use Firefox.
