Any ideas please?
Have thought of a metal trough of some sort for the charcoal (from junk shop) or old 45 gal barrel in half.
Cut slots in the top short ends to house spit (rod of metal from somewhere)
Can't think of how to drive it!
Thought of washing machine motor but without gearing it would send the chickens flying into the barley field!
Thought of old bicycle and somebody peddling but that might end up being me peddling.........
Perhaps a dog harness with a bonio attatched in front and some sort of spindle device?
Please. please can you come up with ideas however ridikkyless they seem?

I've got a small electric motor you can have, came off a hand-blender that melted (ok,so I left it in the pot). With an inner tube as a drive belt, the strain of four chickens should slow it down enough. Or put it through a dimmer switch to adjust the speed.
Saw an old spit roast for pigs with a bicycle wheel welded on the end, turned by hand! You could do the same, but with string wound round the wheel rim and a weight to let gravity turn it. Would mean winding it up again though.
If I have any other brainwaves over dinner, will post again....Donk

Aaaaaaaaah dimmer switch!! Great idea! My bro is the leccy not me, don't understand all the resistor and solenoid words and things. Would a hand-blender motor not burn out with the weight of the chickens and spit tho? Love the idea of the windy uppy stringy one, now that I could probably do (as we have no MIG welder yet! - hint to fli) Elfy! Am watching all the 'relateds' another great idea, didn't think of looking on youtube as well!!! Gosh there are some nerds on there lol - this is going to keep me entertained for the next 5 days

You could always come and pick up the one I forgot about that I already have in the cellar! Tis only for 2 chickens though,a bit rusty, but nothing a bit of Zebraline wouldn't sort out. Then ya just have to motorise it,Top Gear stylee wiv a V8

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D @ V8 ! T'would fling the chickens 2kms into the next town, that said I think I'd rather sit listening to a V8 rather than eating chicken Will keep your duo spit in mind donk TQ! Am really looking for a bulk chicken spit jobby ......... Keep these ideas coming in ladies and gents! Might even do a tekky drawing when enough ideas are in the pot

Can't think of how to drive it! Please. please can you come up with ideas however ridikkyless they seem? Manually? Like they did in the olden days. Fli could do it! Or failing that nick one/borrow one from the market stall peeps who have those multiple thingy spits, at markets.

Well it is a sign that the Fli has returned! He's convinced me to buy one of a similar design that I had in mind to make. I'd sourced the motor from Taiwan for 12 quid (batt, mains and car cig driven), was just lacking the shaft.......... Couldn't find much on t'internet for width needed and wanted ssteel really, found as many clamps and thingys as needed, know where could get a base/basin thingy so prob could have made one for around 40 squids. This is the one: www.auxprixbas.fr/jardin/barbecues/bbq-smoker/barbecue-avec-tournebroche-pour-porcelet-roti.html#details_infoWell at least this one would take a suckling piglet whereas my version would have prob fell apart ;D Not sure I want to 'invest' tho. Was quite looking forward to the challenge of home-made. Is it worth it? Thinks we're gunna have a long hot summer and we do quite a bit off hentertaining here..............
