.... when we must fight to survive.....
I post this now in the Nature thread, because fighting to survive is everywhere in Nature. Nature red in tooth and claw.
The survival of the fittest, kill or be killed, eat or starve, your family first and foremost, you even more so, a ruthless determination to survive....
Man's inventive genius has taken us above such savage considerations - now food and shelter is plentiful - cabbages cost a £, and the Welfare State will see to it that you can have that, however ill-placed you are - there's no need to kill or to poach to survive...
So entrenched is a sense of survival that we seek to gain advantage, to get more, at the expense of someone else. Every time that we get a bargain we do so at the expense of someone else. Our gain is their loss. There remains a competitive outlook, err, even when we don't need a competitive outlook.
It's not in our own interest for someone to take a loss so that we can gain advantage. So that we can get something cheap, and not care two hoots if the other party takes a loss. When you don't care don't be surprised when they don't care, next time. They'll stitch you up next time, to make good there previous loss, so as to survive... What goes around, comes around...
And so engage in a competitive, dog-eat-dog way of life, ducking and diving, making false promises to get your business, and accepting as a way of life that snarling, complaining, stitching up, short-changing is how life is.
Aggressive it once was, now it's not if you don't want it to be. You can rise above the fussin' and fightin'. You can live at a higher level. We've evolved into something above the desperate. We can rise above it.
"Rise up, and Follow Me" said Someone, Somewhere, once.
