I'm settling in nicely

We're told to do crossword puzzles or anything which keeps us using our mental faculties. Getting older brings with it a decline in our ability to reason and to think, apparently, and culminates in a total loss - dementia.
Even my dog suffers. Denied by physical incapacity to hunt, chase and kill his mind is going. Some of his behaviour now is distressing to see.
I've started to look up every word that I don't understand when I'm reading - and there's a lot of them when I choose to read 'heavy' books - I used to just skim over them and ignore them - but now I make myself concentrate hard, because I know that my concentration is failing....
What else can we do? Learn a new language? Watch less telly, on the grounds that it's too easy? I don't know.
