This topic is about garden composting. The title refers to the dumping of garden waste in some far-flung corner, to be invaded by nettles, bindweed and grasses, and to be looked upon with contempt. The title is also taken from the first line of a hymn, referring to somewhere else, but is no less captivating for that.....
Associated with the green hill is the almighty task of getting rid of it, eventually. This can lead people to not allow the hill to form at all, but to make regular trips to the decheterie every time that they generate garden waste....
Composting used to entail turning the heap, watering it then barrowing the resulting compost onto the plot. Now there's "in-situ composting" which entails none of these things at all....
It's demonstrable that garden compost is a superior substitute for shop-bought multi-purpose potting compost. Mixed with 10mm gravel it provides all the structure and plant nutrition you need, in big enough pots. Ali's rueing the fact that she doesn't have a veg plot any more points to the solution of growing in pots/tubs, without spending money on compost or fertilizers...
Take it to its logical limit and you can grow most of your own food for practically nothing. Add to home-grown veg cheap meat like saucisson a l'ail and you're living for practically nothing...
More importantly, you live like a peasant and eat like a King. Cutting and gathering composting material becomes a way of life, throughout the year. You're more active, sleep like a brick and watch less telly. You make a connection with every living thing, the sky above, the wind, the rain, the sunshine...
