We have a vegetarian diabetic coming to stay.
She is very strict on the diabetic thing and I would like some advice on artificial sweetener.
I know nothing whatsoever about these products, but seem to remember a few years ago one of them was demonised (don't remember which one - perhaps it was all of them) I would be interested to know:-
1.Are they okay to use? 2 Do they actually taste like sugar or do they have a nasty aftertaste? 3 Do they look like sugar - ie will the consistency of cake, for example, remain the same? 4 Which ones are available in French supermarkets?
Thanks

Is it me? Why don't you just ask her, she will know what her diet will allow and what is a no no. I am sure she would appreciate being asked rather than say when she arrives sorry I cannot eat that?

Thanks Sabjac. Meldrew - I take your point, but I also have a lot of others coming at the same time and want to make sure stuff is palatable for them too. My granddaughter is gluten intolerant and likes gluten free bread but the rest of the family don't enjoy it at all as it tastes so different.

I do appreciate your problem, I lived with a vegetarian for many years, never could get my head around the fact that she liked Quorn sausages because they looked like real ones!! I am diabetic so sugar stuff is bad for me but also after recent heart problems I have to almost totally avoid anything with salt, non-salted bread is disgusting!

I read, I think, somewhere, that bread turns to sugar as soon as it's digested.... is that right?

I can turn wine into water if that helps? Sorry, my father in law is diabetic as is my brother in law, they seem to eat anything and pop tablets when they do!

I used to do that too David, but latest heart meds meant a change in diabetic pills and now I have to be good! If I am not it bites me back!!!
