It's been a day for mother nature's less pleasant side today at Pennaneac'h! Firstly, when I went into the garage there was a young hedge sparrow throwing a tizzy. It flew out but stopped as soon as it was clear and I saw two adult Jays sat waiting for what they thought was going to be breakfast for one of them. However, I chased them off and the youngster's parents turned up and led it away. About an hour later I went into the log-room to do some tile cutting with my angle grinder and in the corner was an adder with a toads head in it's mouth. Both looked dead and I thought the adder had choked to death on the enormous toad it had killed. However, it got a bit stroppy when I picked it up and shook it off the toad to see if that was still alive. Threw snake back into the corner and on returning it had gone. However, the toad was dead and got thrown onto the waste land behind the log-room.

Oh dear.Know it's nature but I get so upset when things like this happen. We have 2 pairs of jays coming to feed and 2 of this years young have joined them. The woodpeckers chase them off the bird table-only about a fifth of their size!

Gross BE - wouldn't have gone near the adder - yuk. at least a happy ending for the bird if not the toad
