BC - I agree with you - I too would have shut up.
Sonic - thats why we like this forum - we can feel free to disagree without being pulled.

Yes free speech, but the majority seem to find this point of view offensive including me.Even if I shared BE's opinion I would have kept it to myself as what is the point of ruffling feathers on a subject this sensitive? totally agree this would not be tolerated on most forums

I guess BE realises that he holds a minority opinion on this but long may he hold the right to that opinion. As stated this forum does allow the right to free speech and as long as it doesn't degenerate into personal insults, long may that remain. After all isn't that what both world wars were about? .............Freedom........... PC or not.

I think I've said before that the Satellite hobby forum I belong to forbids any threads pertaining to politics or religion, partly because it's a specialist forum (albeit with a 'general discussion' area) and because discussion of such things invites polemic views.
Should this apply to this forum? I don't think so, because it's more of a general forum and as long as we accept that people can express themselves in an adult way, it should remain that way. Yes, you can consider what BE said to be offensive, perhaps he should have thought twice about posting it, maybe he's looked at what's been said by the respondents to his original post and will be more tactful from now on, I don't know. But I'm not going to suggest he can't post on subjects he feels strongly about.

lets not go down the route of another brittany forum, where dicussions revole around what hotel vouchers they have found, what pub grub they had at dinner time or how wonderful their children are.It was a really lively forum but ruined by not saying anything that is outside of the realms of genteel tea on the lawn

If the computer will hold up long enough! All I am saying is that after 70 odd years isn't about time to draw a line in the sand and say, "We restart from here." If you watch the Remembrance Day programme on BBC TV it is just like the Holocaust Day programme all glitzy production and schmaltz. Far,far removed from the original concept. They even have the bad taste of wheeling out seriously injured soldiers from recent conflicts to get the emotions of the viewers going. Yes, I have stopped watching it!
To finish I shall tell you of a dear friend now long dead. He went into a Japenese POW camp weighing 11st 8 lbs and came out at 5st. Also he was minus all his finger and thumb tips, cut off for stealing the guards food. He had a permanent tremble in all his limbs and probably suffered as much as the concentration camp inmates. However, I do not see him and all his similarly treated mates being lauded. I am truly sorry, but not repentant, if this thread I have started has upset some folk.

B.E. you have touched on a subject that is true and no one wants to upset the apple cart yet again and say any thing. POW in Japan etc. no one wants to do a program that shows the real picture on this any more as we dropped nuclear bombs on them............... and they also produce a lot of our consumer goods, eg PC parts and mobile phones.
History is there to be learned from if we forget our history we will repeat the same mistakes.

The trouble being that history is written by the winners and to get a balanced view is neigh on impossible.

Free speech is just that, BE was entitled to express his view and others are free to disagree and offer an alternate view. However, If the forum admin had decided to pull the thread without further discussion that could be considered repressive and a denial of free speech... Yus.
