I refuse to even think about Christmas before 1st December. The barrage of advertising and shops full of gifts from October in the UK used to make me sick of it before it arrived. I shall use the first 3 weeks of December to buy my gifts, send my cards and get in the mood to enjoy the day. Much nicer over here, perhaps a little too quiet, but for me still supremely preferrable to the 3 month commercial free for all over there. I agree with you johnp but did exactly that last year and parcels arrived after new year -3 weeks to get there.France is catching up with England with this early hard sell. When we 1st arrived here there was no sign of Xmas till mid December.Sad now.Anyone seen any Easter eggs yet??

I have just come back from the UK having done my Christmas visits to the family early. All my family and friends know I absolutely hate the whole Christmas thing so I treat my grandchildren as they seem to expect it, but the rest I just say 'have a good time'!! Last year my wife sent off for some French charity Christmas cards, they arrived in January!! Consequently we sent just 2 cards, one to each of our Mothers, it seems no one else even noticed they didn't get one Probably won't bother this year. Close friends we will see or ring, the rest on the old 'Christmas card list never speak to us during the year so why waste a stamp on them? Could send ecards but those are so naff anyway! My favorite Christmas shopping story was quite a few years ago, my teenage daughter insisted that we did Christmas shopping together, apparently my choice of presents was inappropriate to say the least. I told her I had allocated 3/4 hour to shop for everyone, she laughed and said you mean 3 to 4 days - I said no - we finished it in 40 minutes, presents for 8 people She was gob-smacked!! I hate shopping more than Christmas!! My son who buys obscene amounts of presents for his 2 children says he is coming to France to buy, as here all the presents are wrapped in the shops! He says he and his wife have annual rows over the way the presents for the kids are wrapped, as he says, they don't even look at the wrapping on Christmas day anyway! (I know, I know women do look and carefully cut the sellotape to keep the paper for next year ((and then don't use it!!)) So for me roll on January when I can get back to work without clients saying 'we will think about it after Christmas' - its one bl**dy day, get over it!!

I've just come back from the annual UK Christmas shopping trip laden down like a pack horse!! Had to buy for the visiting Grandchildren and their parents which is not the norm. Flew back Southend to Rennes and were told one bag ONLY on board in the cabin, reinforced by the officious woman at the boarding gate.....why? the plane was not even half full. It would be good if this rule was consistent. Southampton don't care, neither does Rennes, Stansted sometimes do but not always! Makes me cross!!

Would have been more than cross,BC.Don't think I could stand the crowded shops over there now(never could really) Haven't been back to England for about 8 years.

And what about Black Friday in the UK? Remarkable scenes on the TV. It was shocking but I did laugh at the total ridiculousness of it all.People who should know better, wrestling with TVs and things they probably didn't need.
