that's what i saw outside our house last week. i had to look it up on tinternet. i think its a carpenter bee.

I couldn't decide whether it was a carpenter or mason bee,TC.Thought they were nesting in muddy patch on lawn,but read mason bees take mud to line their nests.Interesting eh?

Thanks Tinks - thats lovely.
Is he the same type as the one I saw - mine had a sort of gold spray effect on his upper back....don't know a lot about bees .. could it be the difference between a male and female?
